Solastalgia

BigCi Artist Residency, Bilpin, NSW, Australia

  • 6 x 6”

Created while in residency at BigCi over the duration of a month, this photographic body of work explores the concept of Solastalgia. A term coined by philosopher Glenn Albrecht, Solastalgia is “the homesickness you have when you are still at home and your home environment is changing in ways you find distressing. In many cases this is in reference to global climate change. Solastalgia refers to the distress specifically caused by environmental change while still in a home environment. It is the sense of loss from an anticipated future”.

These images were created while walking the recently burnt bush. The 2019-2020 Australian bushfire season, also known as “Black Summer” was one of the most intense and catastrophic fire seasons on record in Australia. The fires burnt an estimated 24.3 million hectares, destroyed over 3,000 buildings (including 2,779 homes), and killed at least 34 people.

Polaroids were manipulated to emulate memory, destruction, and longing. The work invites viewers to consider the history of place and change.
