Metamorphosis of Moth

mixed media: naturally dyed fiber, micaceous clay, found moth bodies, sheets of mica
Metamorphosis of Moth was created as a part of “Windows on the Future”, an exhibition curated by Vital Spaces in response to need for accessible, safe art in the COVID-19 global health pandemic. This multi-media installation was created in response to Miller Moth carcasses found after a recent urban moth infestation. Enamored with these creatures Call began to research and learn of this species and their recent life cycle disruption being due to drought in their native rural habitats.
The four windows hold varying stages of the moth’s life cycle, with a clay basin beneath containing water as a representation of the draught resulting in their recent migration. Each window contains textual poetry, inviting the viewer into dialogue with the piece. The window was visible at all times of day, most potent at dusk when the moths would flee towards the light.
This piece speaks to Call’s interpretation of the theme “A Window on the Future” through the symbolism of the moth. The nocturnal nature of the moth represents navigation through darkness, vigilantly following the path of light, adjusting and adapting when needed. The future is dependent on efforts of navigating darkness to cultivate metamorphosis and radical new ways of creating.
The development of this work was funded by Vital Spaces, The Paseo Project, and 516 ARTS.
